Campaign to BAN plastic micro beads in cleansers, body scrubs, toothpaste and many other cosmetics
For over two decades, scientists like Dr. Murray Gregory in New Zealand, have warned us about the polluting potential of plastic micro beads used as abrasives in cleaning preparations. They have been found in alarming quantities in marine ecosystems, and now is the time to ban their use.
These micro beads mimic tiny planktonic organisms, which are indiscriminately filtered out of seawater day in and day out by the filter feeders of the ocean, including the sardines and herring that we consume. The beads are efficient accumulators of persistent organic pollutants and transfer them into the marine food web. We must stop hurting ourselves and natural systems with our half-baked attempts at ‘progress’. New materials that insinuate themselves into the biosphere with unintended negative consequences are becoming all too common and need to obey the precautionary principle of thorough investigation and assessment before they are unleashed on us and the natural environment that sustains us.
Plastic micro beads (PE, PP, PET, PMMA) could never pass muster in such and assessment and should be banned!
I therefore ask you all urgently to support the Dutch Plastic Soup Foundation and the North Sea Foundation in their upcoming campaign BEAT THE MICRO BEAD.
We demand that:
- Retailers STOP already with selling any product containing plastic ingredients as soon as possible
- Companies STOP using micro beads inside products and return to the natural sources as soon as possible. Natural abrasive materials to substitute for the plastic ingredients are readily available!
- European politicians to formulate effective legislation to BAN the sale and production of products containing micro beads as of January 1st 2014;
We ask:
- Consumers to BOYCOTT products containing plastic ingredients, starting now.
PLEASE GET IN CONTACT WITH THE PLASTIC SOUP FOUNDATION TO SUPPORT THIS CAMPAIGN.
